OUTPUT

STANDARD OUTPUT CATEGORIES

The hierarchical structure of the ASCED allows the users the flexibility to output statistics at the level of the classification which best suits their requirements. For further information see the 'Education Standard Variables Guide’.

The recommended standard output categories for data for 'Highest year of school completed' are:

  • Year 12 or equivalent
  • Year 11 or equivalent
  • Year 10 or equivalent
  • Year 9 or equivalent
  • Year 8 or below
  • Never attended school
For school level education, the output follows the same principle for those who have completed their school education and for those who are still studying at school.

Aggregation of categories

'Highest year of school completed' can be output in aggregations based on the Detailed Level ASCED categories dependent on survey requirements. For example:

Example 1:

  • Year 12
  • Year 11 or below, or
Example 2:
  • Year 12
  • Year 11
  • Year 10
  • Year 9 or below
Constraints affecting statistical collection, such as confidentiality or standard errors, may not permit the output of data at the more detailed levels of the classification. However, regardless of the level of aggregation envisaged for dissemination, where possible, data should be captured, classified and stored at the detailed level of the classification. The use of the standard classification will enhance data comparability even though it may not always be possible to disseminate the data at the most detailed level.

SUPPORTING VARIABLES

'Highest year of school completed' does not have supporting variables. However, it is a supporting variable to 'Level of highest educational attainment'.
